Diversifying the compact city: A renewed agenda for geographical research

The compact city has become part of the policy orthodoxy in dealing with climate change and other sustainability challenges, scholars from a diverse set disciplines have informed this through empirical research. In paper, we argue that attuning research field to key perspectives concepts human geography critical urban studies can help ‘diversify’ understandings urbanism ways advance social ecological justice. We show been conceived primarily lens territorially bounded physical form, thereby many its social, political, implications are overlooked. Based on critique, propose renewed agenda for rearticulates it as strategy sustainable transformation by bridging socio-material relational approaches engaging geographical toolbox. Three entry points highlighted: (1) commoning city; (2) metabolism cities; (3) antagonism city.
